Holding Queer Digitalities
Holding Queer Digitalities is an interactive quilt exploring personal queer digital archives.
It was created for Goldsmiths’ MA Computational Arts 2024 Degree Show, using a Bare Conductive Touch Board, conductive and embroidery thread, cyanotype-printed patches and a cotton quilt.
Inspired by quilting traditions as a radical form of record keeping and knowledge sharing, the artwork holds everyday traces of queer digital lives. Each cyanotype-printed patch contains stories related to different digital objects from people’s archives. By touching the embroidered words, visitors can listen to the stories behind the objects, recorded as voice notes to the artist. These messages cover a variety of formats from burned CDs to WhatsApp messages, and queer experiences from first crushes to journeys of self discovery, long-term love and finding chosen family.
